Surprise is the Prize

Surprise is the Prize in the Project Space, is Luanne E. Witkowski’s exploration of plein air printmaking and the possibilities that emerge when the process remains open to the unexpected. Working outdoors with natural materials and changing conditions, Witkowski collaborates with “Mother Nature” as an active participant in the making of the work. Through cyanotype, turmeric printing, ink, acrylic medium, and layered processes of adding and subtracting, she embraces experimentation rather than predetermined results. The resulting works record both the artist’s interventions and the unpredictability of the environment, revealing delicate shifts in color, texture, pattern, and form. For Witkowski, surprise is not an interruption of the process but its reward—a source of discovery and a way of finding new perspectives within change.
