Stone Circle Bench is an extension of Ekene Ijeoma's ongoing living monument and archive, Black Forest. Working with communities and local organizations, Ijeoma's project honors the deceased by planting trees to recognize Black lives lost across Boston. Tree plantings bring communities together in remembrance while providing the long-term environmental benefit of tree coverage—lowering temperatures and enhancing health and well-being. The bench and trees address the disproportionate mortality rates faced by Black communities, which are exacerbated by environmental disparities due to, among other factors, reduced tree coverage in redlined neighborhoods.
