Persona: Photography and the Re-Imagined Self

Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum

25 Evans Way, Boston, MA 02115

Persona: Photography and the Re-Imagined Self highlights how artists, historical and contemporary, have utilized photography to create personas that explore concepts of identity and self-representation. The exhibition considers how these artists have navigated, challenged, and redefined the notion of self, as well as the strategies they’ve adopted to engage with its inherent fluidity. Approximately 80 works—from the 20th century to the present—represent a wide range of artists engaging with themes of gender, personal histories, icons and stereotyping. The exhibition is co-curated by Pieranna Cavalchini, the Gardner’s Tom and Lisa Blumenthal Curator of Contemporary Art, and Melissa Harris, editor-at-large of Aperture Foundation.
