This June, multidisciplinary artist Kristen Freitas presents On Motherhood in Times Like These, a solo exhibition exploring the layered realities of motherhood through themes of family, heritage, resilience, and resistance.

Through a dynamic body of work spanning painting, installation, and mixed media, Freitas invites viewers into an immersive environment where personal narrative meets collective experience. The exhibition reflects on what it means to nurture, protect, and pass down values in an ever-shifting world—honoring both the quiet and powerful acts that shape identity across generations.

Rooted in Freitas’ signature use of color, texture, text and spatial transformation, the exhibition considers motherhood not only as a personal role but as a broader cultural force. Works explore the idea of “roots”—what we inherit, what we preserve, and what we choose to redefine. Moments of reflection are balanced with gestures of resistance, asking how care, creativity, and community can serve as forms of strength and action.

Visitors are encouraged to move through the space as an experience, encountering works that engage both visually and emotionally. Elements of participation and interaction may invite audiences to reflect on their own histories, connections, and definitions of family.

Kristen Freitas is a multidisciplinary artist based in Newton, MA, and an active member of the East Boston arts community. Her practice spans  painting, printmaking and installation, often exploring themes of color, language, and human connection. She works out of Turtle Studios, a shared space in Newton, and serves as the Interim President of the East Boston Artists Group, where she is committed to expanding access to the arts and fostering community through creative programming.
