In the Center Gallery, Gabriel Wilson—guest artist and son of Sharon Kaitz—presents Lay of the
Land. A multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans film, painting, and photography, Wilson is
fascinated by traditional construction methods, materials, and drafting techniques. Wilson builds up
and strips down his work, allowing layers to obscure and reveal one another as he searches for what
lies underneath—the original plan, the overlooked detail, the hidden story. In these intimate pieces,
old postcards, blueprints, paper scraps, and other found materials become the foundation for
paintings that evoke crumbling plaster, decaying wrought iron, aging architecture, and obsolete
technologies. His works resist the speed and disposability of contemporary visual culture, instead
giving attention to the pentimento of surfaces altered by time. An errant root emerging from the
forest becomes a metaphor for this way of seeing: a small visible sign pointing toward a much larger,
unseen world beneath it.
