Held in the Making brings together works by artists who teach and work at the Brookline Arts Center, each offering a distinct way of seeing and engaging with the world. Spanning ceramics, metals, paper, textiles, painting, performance, and installation, the exhibition reflects a wide range of approaches to making—work that is held by curiosity, lived experience, and care.
At BAC, making and teaching exist in close conversation. The artists in this exhibition carry their values and questions between studio and classroom, shaping spaces where creativity is held, nurtured, and allowed to take form. Held in the Making honors art as something that grows through care and commitment, and recognizes the essential role of educators and artists in sustaining that growth.
The works gathered here move across themes of material knowledge, transformation, continuity, and attention to everyday life. Some engage directly with cultural or political realities; others find meaning through observation, memory, or process. Together, they affirm that art does not begin with certainty or polish, but is held in learning, experimentation, and the willingness to begin.
