**JUROR STATEMENT
**Figurative art has piqued the interest of people for centuries. Whether it’s the sole stick figure found in the caves at Lascaux from 16,000 years ago or Michelangelo’s Pietà from the 15th century, people have always been moved by depictions of their fellow humans in a variety of ways. One thinks of an Islamic mosque upholding aniconism to refrain from depicting people—the prerogative of God—alongside the Greek myth of Pygmalion and Galatea, where the artist becomes God, breathing life into his human subject. Figurative art can be grandiose, spectacular, controversial, and pedestrian. The art is as diverse as people themselves. 

This exhibition brings together a wide range of figurative art, from the detailed sculpture of a single hand by Thomas Linville to the emotional rendering of a relationship by Leela Corman. 

You’ll see an elaborate rendering of a life model by Shea Stoner-Day next to the abstracted portrayal of human emotions by Anne Johnstone. The smoky mysticism of Charles Suggs’ portraits is juxtaposed with the close-up texture of flesh by Victory Macchi, while the psychosexual nature of Robert Siegelman’s lone figure plays with tension and harmony against the image of a crowded pastry kitchen by Liana Almeida. As with everyone in this exhibition, the focus on figuration becomes the mode through which these artists express their perspectives on what it means to be human.
