The first in a series of three exhibitions in support of OCEANS, Crochet Coral Reef features a series of hand-crocheted works by Margaret Wertheim and Christine Wertheim, alongside the paper sculpture explorations of Erik Demaine and Martin Demaine. Spurred by rising ocean temperatures and other human-induced stressors, coral reefs are dying at unprecedented rates. Though they occupy less that 1% of the ocean floor, coral reefs are home to over a quarter of marine life and are essential to the health of our planet’s oceans—understanding and preserving these vital ecosystems is more essential than ever. Artists and advocates Christine Wertheim and Margaret Wertheim, along with thousands of global collaborators, have responded to this with Crochet Coral Reef, a compelling series of colorful handmade forms that mirror living corals.
