While the temperatures soar outside, the Courtyard remains cool with the green of ferns, and the sounds of water in the fountains. At this time of year, the chimney bellflower, Campanula pyramidalis, appears in the Courtyard; its tall flowering stalks are resplendent with starry blue and white flowers. The Museum’s horticulturists grow this plant as a biennial from seed; after two years, the plant grows to its six-foot maturity, resulting in a soft, Edenic escape within the Gardner. On view August through September, exact dates subject to change
